The Mighty J Martini
2 08 2007
I think we might have mentioned it before, so I thought I’d describe a bit further what this MTJ Martini is about. We approached friends of Tiki, the Mighty Mixologists Chryssy Naluai and Lani Young with what could be thought of as an unusual request (perhaps they are not true mixologists, but they have inspired palates so in my book they are.) We asked them to create a drink that represented the ladies of Mighty J. Essentially we needed something that would be playful to the taste, sexy to look at yet sophisticated enough to be enjoyed by even the most ridiculous hotel owning, golf on the week days, fly off to Paris for lunch, art lover that has no idea what art is, too good for public school, won’t drink beer out of a can kind of person. Furthermore, we requested that the drink contain the three colors of Mighty J, that being Green for Jenn, Yellow for Mailani and Orange for Tiki. To add to this, we wanted the drink to be served in a Martini glass. I learned from Rai (who has a culinary arts degree by the way) that in order to serve it in a Martini glass, the drink needed to have a particular type of alcohol in it, one of which is Vodka.
Why a drink named after the group? I like the idea of people saying the name Mighty J over and over again. In fact, if you’re reading this I would appreciate it if you would wake each morning chanting Mighty J, Mighty J, Mighty J, Mighty J over and over again. You can do this while you’re preparing breakfast or maybe in the car on the way to work. Do what works best for you. Anyway, I digress. The basic concept for me was to stop saying Budweiser and get people to say Mighty J. Anyone watch Boston Legal? This is like the Denny Crane, say my name beeeotch concept.
So our friendly mixologists did come up with a very special drink and it fit all the requirements as well. The Mighty J Martini is a playful, sexy yet sophisticated drink. It has the 3 colors of the MTJ rainbow, Apple liquor for the green, Banana liquor for the yellow, and Li hing powder for the orange. It does have Vodka in it so it can be served in a Martini glass. Beyond that, like the music of Mighty J, the friggin drink packs a punch!
So the next time you’re at a bar, be sure to ask the Bar Tender to prepare a Mighty J for you. Some may not be willing to do it, but through my experience that probably means you’re a bad tipper. If they don’t know whats in a Mighty J (and they probably won’t) you can start off with a joke and tell them Mai, Tiki and Jenn. When the Bar Tender looks confused, gently clear your throat and recite the following recipe to him/her:
2 parts vodka (80 proof)
4 parts apple liquor (30 proof)
1 part banana liquor (99 proof)
2 parts pineapple juice
combine all ingredients
Shake with ice, strain and serve in martini glass
Rim glass with li hing mui (powder)
Garnish with cherry (optional)
